Interview responses:

Hosoi-san

1. All four.

2. I wanted a chance to attend a lecture from the boss, Yuki Ishikawa.

3. I think the technique is practical. The details I was able to learn made it easy to understand. The variations seem usable in a variety of scenarios.

4. I think I can use the technique now.

5. The omoplata also seems usable in various situations and I’d like to add it to my arsenal.

Ishikawa-san

1. All four.

2. The technique isn’t something I use often. While I knew about it I didn’t understand it in detail.

3. In a word: good. While the different variations might look the same, I thought actually making fine positional adjustments and changing patterns to penetrate my opponent’s defense was interesting.

4. I will drill the technique more and develop the capacity.

5. I have great expectations.

Miwa-san

1. All four.

2. I was motivated by my respect for Ishikawa-sensei, our director.

3. The content of the classes was organized. We covered all the patterns in the first class and from the second class Ishikawa-sensei explained how each pattern can develop in use. I felt my understand of the technique grew with each variation we covered. I thought both his teaching and his technique were sharp.

4. I think I could use this in half guard situations now. I’d like to learn combinations with other techniques as well.

5. I have great expectations. There are a lot of opportunities to use an omoplata in sparring and I want to understand it in greater detail.
